Gidley Cross - Affeton Moor Cross - Thorham Chapel Cross - Gidley Cross

Distance:  6.5 miles      Time:  2hrs

Although this walk is entirely on the road, there are many lovely views, wild flowers, butterflies and birds to spot along the route.  It is possible to shorten the route by taking a public footpath through Rackleigh farm, which comes out by the Old Smithy just above Adworthy.  However, it is often muddy and not that clearly marked so easy to take the wrong route.

Leaving Gidley Cross, walk in the direction of Chulmleigh, crossing over Burrow Cross and then turning left at Mouseberry Cross.  After a little while you will pass the staghounds kennels on your right.  Continue past/through the farms at Lutworthy until you reach the Affeton Moor crossroads.

Turn left and follow the route down the hill over Town Moor bridge and up quite a steep hill until you reach Twn Moor Cross.  Turn left and shortly you will come to the tiny Thornham Chapel where many local families have relatives buried there.  At Thornham Chapel Cross turn left and continue past Adworthy Farm and the Old Smith (note the letterbox in the front hedge).  When you come to the fork in the road, you have a choice of taking the left-hand fork and continuing until you reach Burrow Cross, where you would turn right and end up back at Gidley Cross.  Or you may take the right-hand fork and take the quieter lane past Horseford Farm and the Blagrove Farms, then up onto the B3137 and back to Gidley Cross.
